Mendez, Leonor (Hijar)

Leonor "Nonie" Mendez (Hijar), age 73, passed away on March 10, 2016 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, NM. She was born and raised in Duran, NM, and was a graduate of Encino High School. After moving to Albuquerque, she pursued a career in the food service industry and retired from St. Joseph's Hospital as a dietary aide. Along with her sisters, Nonie was an active member of the Sacred Heart Society of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Duran, NM.

She is survived by her sister: Carmen Larrañaga (Flavio); nieces and nephews: Angela & Mark Romero, Anthony Larranaga, Robbie and Leslie Larranaga, Rose Marie Hijar, Carla Jaramillo and Vinita Pedroncelli, Henrietta Jaramillo and Todd Stewart, Judith Jaramillo (Goddaughter) and David Chavez, James "Jamie" Jaramillo and Rachel "Grace" Gutierrez; great-nieces and great-nephews: Adriana, Joshua, Marcos, Dominic, AJ, Brandon, Ethan, Christian, Nevaeh, Evinn and Jayden; many cousins and friends.

Nonie also had a special bond with her niece Rose Marie and Rose Marie's daughter Kyra, assisting her sister, Mary Ellen, in raising them. They loved her like a second mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents Guillermo and Casimira Hijar; sisters: Inez Lucero, Mary Ellen Hijar and Arcelia Jaramillo; nephews: Jeremy Jaramillo and Dalmacio Lucero.

A loving daughter, sister, wife, mother figure, auntie, godmother, cousin and friend Nonie will be remembered for her genuinely compassionate soul. We love you sister, Auntie, Nina and Tita.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 6pm, followed by the rosary at 7pm at St. Anne's Catholic Church, located at 1400 Arenal Rd. SW. The Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 10am at St. John the Baptist Church in Duran, NM with the burial to follow at the Duran Cemetery. A meal will be hosted by the family at the School Cafeteria in Encino.
