Sedillo, Maria Samora

Maria Samora Sedillo, 77, passed away December 22, 2016, with her family by her side. She was born and raised in Tierra Amarilla, NM. Her family moved to Albuquerque when she was a teenager, and she attended Washington Junior High School and Albuquerque High School. She was a Food Services Manager with the University of New Mexico Mental Health Center for 14 years. In 1991, a life-time dream was fulfilled when she became co-owner and manager of her own business, Catering For Your Pleasure, Inc., catering both intimate dinners and large-scale events. After eight years, she returned to school and earned a Certificate in Business Administration from the Albuquerque Technical-Vocational Institute. She was hired by the UNM Division of Continuing Education where she was the Facility Manager of the Continuing Education Carlisle Center for five years. Maria later worked on the Mariachi Spectacular and The Story of New Mexico Programs, and ended her career as an accounting technician in the business office. She retired from UNM in 2003. Maria was a member of the Hispanic Women Council for over 20 years.

Family was everything to her. Maria's home was the center of family gatherings and where her legendary cooking was enjoyed by all, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas, her favorite holidays.

Her children viewed her as the strongest mother they ever knew. She took on the enormous task of raising five children on her own, devoting her life to their wellbeing and support. She instilled family values by her actions throughout her children's lives. She will be extremely missed by her children, her siblings and close friends, all of whom she held close to her heart.

Maria was preceded in death by her son, David J. Lopez; parents, Jose E. and Julia T. Samora, and by her brother, Isaac Samora.

She leaves four children, Rose Lopez, Tim Lopez, Andrew Lopez and Gillie Sedillo; ten grandchildren, J. W. Abeln, Daniel Abeln, Chayna Martinez, David Lopez, Jr., Christopher Lopez, Olivia LeMon, Valentea Lopez, Paget Lopez, Durban Lopez and Summer Lopez; three great-grandchildren, Wick Abeln, Sebastian Martinez and Elijah LeMon; sisters and brothers, Elsie Sanchez, Joe A. Samora, Terrie Sais, Vangie Samora, Joseph E. Samora, Jr.; nieces and nephews, Julie Sanchez, Vic Sanchez, Troy Samora, Kimbree Steiner and Byron Samora.

A private memorial service for the family has been held.
