Marie Antoinette Wafer Obituary
Wafer, Marie Antoinette

Marie Antoinette Wafer, a pillar of the Albuquerque, New Mexico community passed away after a short illness surrounded by family and friends at the University of New Mexico Hospital on Friday, April 15, 2016. Born in Las Vegas, New Mexico, to Lauro Apodaca and Mary Rose Lucero on August 15, 1942. Marie and her family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in time for her to start school at St. Mary's. Marie was a lifelong St. Mary's Cougar; graduating in 1960 with honors and an academic scholarship to attend the University of New Mexico where she majored in psychology.

Marie married her high school sweetheart, Marvin (aka Mickey) Wafer, Jr in 1964 at the newly built Immaculate Heart Cathedral. Marie is known for her dedication to the Holy Ghost Church and choir, sponsoring and soliciting for the Firefighter's Association, was a very active member of the Highland High School Booster´s club, and along with her beloved Mickey, provided many dedicated years of service to the Zia Little League and the Boy Scouts of America.

Marie retired from the Social Security Administration after 26 years of service, where she was a supervisor. She ran a very successful seasonal tamale business for 46 years and was sought after by family and friends for her bookkeeping and accounting skills. But by far, her most successful and joyful accomplishment was raising her three beloved children.

Marie was voted the most "school spirited" which captured her personality throughout her life. She had a very giving, deeply held religious spirit that was shown through her deeds and illustrated by the way she treated and gave of herself to family and friends. While that essence of Marie is hard to capture in print, her family, friends and the greater Albuquerque community all know this about her.

Marie was predeceased by her husband Mickey and brother Bert Baca.

She is survived by her three children: Marvin Wafer, III and wife Merilyn, Michael Wafer and wife Debbie, and Michelle; six grandchildren: Mandy and husband Mike Vernoy, Joe and wife Carrie, Amada Martin, Emily, and Tyler, Trevor; grand-Chihuahua Cubbie; three great grandkids: Wyatt, Wesley, and Lilly; and her brother and his wife, A. Baltazar (Balt) Baca and wife, Joyce Allen.

The funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, at 10:00 am at Holy Ghost Catholic Church.
