Sayles, Marilynn Joye Hammett

Marilynn Joye Hammett Sayles was a beautiful, vibrant woman, artist, wife, mother and friend. She was born in Council Grove, KS on February 16, 1933. She passed away on November 21, 2016. She is now with our Lord. She attended high school in Kansas City, KS and began working as a line designer at Hallmark Cards upon graduation. Many of the card designs that she created were reproduced for years. She met, and after a whirlwind romance, married George Levi Van Patten. Durimg her marriage to "Van" she had three children, Mark, Cynde and Craig. Her fourth child, Robynn, was born 5 years later. Marilynn reunited with her first love, art. She also enjoyed gardening. She and her two older children, Mark and Cynde loved caring for their large vegetable garden and providing many healthy meals for the family. She began taking oil painting classes and fine-tuned her craft, producing lovely works of art. Marilynn's keen eye for color and composition landed her a job at Kodak as a photo inspector where she worked several years, later providing for her children as a single mother. As an active member of her church, Green Valley Christian, Marilynn wrote and edited the church newsletter. She enjoyed working with the church and the people very much. Marilynn was a lifelong Christian whose faith never wavered.

In her 50's, Marilynn decided to attend college to pursue a degree. She graduated from Evergreen Community College with an Associate of Arts degree in fashion design. She continued her education at Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, CA while working for Santa Clara County as a Family Support Officer. She made sure that men held up their financial responsibilities to their children. Marilynn was a single mother at times in her adult life; and she understood how difficult the role could be without support. Her unique perspective made her very good at her job and she enjoyed it very much.

Her 50's were time of growth for Marilynn. A newly divorced woman on her own, children grown, Marilynn had the opportunity to move in her own direction. She went back to her love of art and started painting again. She also met the love of her life, Robert Sayles, whom she remained married to until the time of her death. Marilynn and Bob lived in San Jose, CA until they retired in 1996 and moved to Clarkdale, AZ. After several years in AZ, they decided to relocate to Rio Rancho, NM. In Rio Rancho, Marilynn stepped up her painting and she and Bob enjoyed an annual vegetable garden. Marilyn and Bob loved their little church in Rio Rancho, NM and she leaves many beloved friends there. AZ amd CA. The memorial services are to be held January 28, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Covenant Christian Church, 6380 Iris Road, Rio Rancho, NM.
