Marjorie M. Steger

1925-2017

Marjorie (Marge) Steger of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away on September 27, 2017 of natural causes, at the age of 91.

She is survived by her son, Tim, and daughter, Deborah, as well as by five grandchildren in the coastal United States and Italy and extended family in the Northeast and Pacific Northwest. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Art Steger; her sister, Dorothy Morrow; and brother, Don Morrow.

Marge was born in the San Francisco Bay Area and grew up in several communities there and in Oregon. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a degree in social welfare. Following, she spent a year in Paris working, learning and achieving fluency in the French language. Returning to the Bay Area, she eventually married and relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she raised two children while Art embarked on his faculty career.

Over the course of her adulthood, Marge volunteered for the Democratic Party, ACLU, Natural History Museum and Rio Grande Nature Center. Additionally, she studied Spanish, linguistics, architecture and geology at the University of New Mexico. She played in local tennis leagues and enjoyed alpine camping and hiking to which she had copious exposure as a child. She was a voracious reader, pianist, sports enthusiast, traveler and amateur naturalist and birder. She was deeply seeded in the North Valley that was home.

We will remember her as a particularly independent woman of her generation, engaged actively in current events and local government, as well as a kind and generous wife, mother and friend.
