DeMar, Mary Alice (Green)

Mary DeMar, 63, passed away at home in Corrales on January 28, 2017.

Mary was born on January 25, 1954 to John Root Green and Anna Vallevik Green of Corrales, NM. She spent her childhood riding horses, pretending to be Roy Rogers, and hating having to wear dresses instead of pants to school.

She graduated from West Mesa High School in '71 and attended UNM for several years. On July 7, 1979, Mary married David Wayne DeMar in her parents' garden and together they built a house on the west end of the Green's property, which remains the DeMar family home today.

Mary ran a daycare from her home for two decades where she befriended many families and their children; she remained close with many for the rest of her life.

Mary stopped taking care of others' children once she had two rambunctious ones of her own: Lisa Marie, born 1990, and Kristi Annette, born 1994. She dedicated much of her life caring for her daughters for which they will always be immeasurably grateful.

Mary also was a friend to animals- caring for geese, ducks, chickens, pigs, cows, sheep, dogs, cats, many horses, and the occasional fish. For 15 years, Mary was instrumental to the success of her husband's aircraft maintenance business, handling all of the finances and bookkeeping.

Mary was a woman of many talents- seamstress, cook, gardener, horse trainer, farmer, household comedian, and Jeopardy! trivia question answerer. She was fearless, from learning to fly her husband's airplane, to driving tractors, combines, and motorcycles, to rescuing any snake or tarantula from the road. With help from her husband, Mary took care of her family's farmland in Corrales for over 30 years and they went on many trips to help farm her Norwegian grandparents' homestead in Williston, ND which she inherited later in life. On these trips, Mary and David always ended up finding and driving rickety old vehicles back to NM to add to their collection of cars and scary stories.

As a child, Mary spent two years living abroad in Norway and Syria with her family for her father's teaching sabbaticals. These early experiences abroad cemented the importance and joys of travel in her, which became one of her life's passions. Her last trip abroad was visiting the Galapagos where she was nipped by an overly playful sea lion while snorkeling.

One of Mary's other passions was the cultural arts. She greatly enjoyed reading, watching movies, visiting museums, seeing operas and musicals, and trying interesting, new food with friends and family.

In 2012, Mary was diagnosed with late stage cancer. In that time, she traveled, road tripped with her husband, saw her daughters graduate from college, grew her garden, went to the gym for the first time in her life, read many books, reconnected with old friends, and spent time with her family.

Mary is survived by her mother Anna Green; her brother John Green; her sister Jane Green; her husband David DeMar, and her daughters Lisa and Kristi DeMar.

A memorial service and reception will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 11:00am at All Saints Lutheran Church (4800 All Saints Rd NW, ABQ, NM 87120). All that her family requests guests to bring are great memories and funny stories of Mary.

Her family would also like to thank all of those who were a friend during her illness; your kindness and care has meant so much to us.
