Mary Leila Fenton Caldwell

Mary Leila Fenton Caldwell died peacefully on January 13, 2018. She was the youngest of five children born to EM and Alice Fenton.

She was raised in the Jemez Mountains, at a time when neighbors were scarce and self-reliance were of utmost importance. She was home schooled by her mother and then sent off to boarding school to complete her education, which she compared to being in prison. She loved animals and being outdoors. Her dream of becoming a veterinarian was squashed when the colleges she applied to would not accept women in the program.

Her husband and love of 62 years was Lew Caldwell Jr. (who preceded her in death). They married in May 1951, one week after her graduation. They lived and ranched and raised three children in Ponderosa, NM. They are Lew M. Caldwell (wife Carol), Diana J. Clark (husband Jim), and Jack A. Caldwell (wife Janet); and were blessed with 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Mary was an accomplished mom, cook, friend, horse woman, wood carver, and very knowledgeable about animal and range husbandry, and worked tirelessly to improve the range they grazed cattle on. She was generous in sharing her knowledge and was called upon many times by neighbors to help with their animals. She touched many lives by her gentle and giving spirit, words of encouragement and exceptional hospitality.

Her finest attributes were her unwavering faith in God that she put into action, and her love for her family. A celebration of a life well lived will be held on February 10, 2018 @ 10:30 AM at Montgomery Blvd Church of Christ (7201 Montgomery Blvd NE). A meal will be shared together afterward. Come, share memories, stories and smiles with her family.
