Maryhelen Hintz Snyder

1932 - 2018

Dr. Maryhelen (Mel) Snyder died peacefully at home on January 23, 2018. A poet, artist, therapist and lifelong Quaker, Mel was a lover of all manner of artistic expression and deep meaningful connection. Beloved mother of four, great/grandmother of 13, neighbor and friend to hundreds, Mel authored four books, dozens of professional articles and book chapters, and published her poetry in several national journals. She was named Poet of the Year by Passager in 2016.

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1932, Mel attended Swarthmore College, where she met her future husband, Dr. Ross Snyder, Jr. They settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico in the early 1960s. Mel was a cofounder of and teacher at the Corrales Community School. After receiving her PhD from the Fielding Institute in Santa Barbara, California in 1984, Mel was an active part of the New Mexico psychology community, taught at the University of New Mexico, and was a creative force in her field, focusing on work with clients that was grounded in deep empathy, honoring her clients' wisdom, and the power of co-creative dialogue. She continued an active practice as a therapist and co-counselor well into her 8th decade. After Ross's death in 1996, Mel stayed in Albuquerque until 2003, when she moved to the Blueberry Hill Co-housing Community in Vienna, Virginia.

Mel is survived by her children, Jennifer Zito of Millersville, MD (Bill Carlson); Susan Snyder of Portland, OR (Michael Greenlick); James Snyder Bradford of Vienna, VA (Lori Barfield) and Kenneth Snyder of Denver, CO (Beth Conover); grandchildren, Jesse, Stephen and Michael Bradford, Abby Criswell, Jessica and Hannah Snyder, James, Bill and Mellie Zito, and Jeremy and Ross Snyder; as well as great-grandchildren Shaia Rose and Arlo Hastings.
