Turner, Pauline

Pauline (Polly) Henderson Turner was born December 27, 1937 in Ralph, Alabama. She was educated in the public schools of Tuscaloosa where she was an honor student. She came from a family which valued education and went on to earn a Ph.D. from UT-Austin in Child Development and Early Childhood Education. Polly was a passionate and vocal fan of the University of Texas and the University of Alabama's football teams.

She came to Albuquerque in 1977, where she spent the remainder of her career at the University of New Mexico as Professor of Family Studies in the College of Education. She was actively involved in faculty governance, serving in the Faculty Senate for many years and as Faculty Senate President in 1984-85.

She was a tireless advocate for children, working to expand early childhood education and improve the quality of day care. She served as director of the Manzanita Child Development Center for 11 years and Director of the Center for Family and Community Partnerships. She co-authored two college texts with her sister, Tommie Hamner, one of which is now in its 5th edition. Even in retirement she stayed active. She was an active member of the UNM Retiree Association, serving on the Benefits Committee.

Her love, energy and passion will be missed by those who knew her.

Polly is survived by her spouse David Hamilton; sister Betty Brown of Ralph, Alabama; son David Lewis and wife Stefanie; son Scott Lewis and wife Leslie; stepson David Hamilton; grandchildren Isaiah and Levi; and numerous nieces and nephews.
