Willey, Richard W.

Richard W. Willey, 94, passed away on January 23, 2016. Dick was born in 1921 in Erie, PA along with his twin brother, Ray. During his youth he helped his family with money by trapping muskrats in the cold PA winters. After high school he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp and was introduced to New Mexico. In 1942, Dick joined the United States Army, as a radio communications operator, specializing in Morse Code. Dick married Pauline Graham in 1946 and they lived in New Jersey until 1947, when they moved to Albuquerque. He was discharged from the Army in 1949. Shortly after the start of the Korean War, Dick was reactivated, being stationed at the Pentagon and eventually returning to Sandia Base. He was then discharged in 1952. After his discharge, Dick worked for 35 years at Sandia Labs as an electronics technician.

Dick loved New Mexico. He enjoyed finding Indian artifacts, pottery fragments and chipped stone. He also spent much of his time fishing and camping with his family. Dick and Pauline attended First Baptist and Hoffmantown Baptist Churches.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife, Pauline.

He is survived by his sons, Warren Willey and Charles Phillips; eight grandchildren; and niece, Kenda Willey.
