Rita Irene Smith Elliott



Rita Irene Smith Elliott passed away on 8/25/17, surrounded by family. Born in England in 1926, she visited Corrales, New Mexico in the early 1950's and never went home. She worked as a lab technician in England before coming to the United States, and later worked for many years as a technical editor for the UNM School of Medicine. She was an IFR rated pilot, earned a Master's degree in English, and was one of the founders of the Adobe Theatre, among other impressive accomplishments. She was a voracious reader and incredible wit. She loved walking her dogs in the sunny North Valley.

Rita is survived by her daughter, Jane Steele Meagher (husband Mike Meagher), her son, Neil Elliott (wife Laurel Nesbitt), grandchildren Daniel, Rhys, Annie, and Max, her siblings Brian Smith (wife Toto) and Yvonne Crochet, sister-in-law Gilly Smith, and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service at New Mexico Earth Adobes, 310 Paseo del Norte NE, Alb at 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 8th, followed by a potluck dinner. The service will be a casual, outdoor event, & people are asked to bring memories to share, a dish to contribute to the potluck, and a picnic or folding chair for seating. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a would be appreciated.
