Smith, Roy Reid, Major U.S. Army, Ret.





Major Roy Reid Smith, U.S. Army, Ret., 91, of Burlington died at Alamance Regional Medical Center on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at 6:45 a.m.

A native of Beaumont, TX, he was a loving husband to Ann Harlow Smith, who survives and the son of Roy Herbert Smith and Mary Reid Smith, both deceased. Roy was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving during World War II, the Korean Conflict when he accepted a direct commission, and the Vietnam War after which he retired with 25 years of service in Medical Service Administration. He served honorably and enjoyed his military service. Roy was of the Methodist faith and deeply devoted to God, country and his family.

In addition to his loving wife, survivors include a daughter, Morna Gale Challoner of Santa Rosa, CA; four grandchildren, Wade Lynn Smith, Austin Reid Smith, Alyson Gale Challoner and Lindsay Paige Challoner; two great- grandchildren, Mason and Heidi Smith; and half-sister, Judi Holder.

He was preceded in death by his previous wife, Mary Ann Roessler Smith; son, Gary Roy Smith; and half brother, Herbert Lynn Smith.

The funeral service will be conducted at the May-Foley Chapel at Twin Lakes Community on Monday, April 4, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. by Rev. Mark Menees. The committal service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.
