Thomys, Ruth

Ruth Thomys of Santa Fe passed away at the age of 96 on May 8, 2017.

Ruth was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and her family moved to Chicago, Illinois when she was seven years old. There she attended Northwestern University and became an elementary school teacher.

She and her late husband Erv retired to Santa Fe in 1977, where they were very active in the Opera Guild, Pro Musica and the Santa Fe Archeology Society. Ruth was also a long time member of the Santa Fe Women's Club and the American Association of University Women. Ruth was honored as the longest serving docent for the Santa Fe Opera, and the staff and volunteers knew her as the "candy lady" because she always handed out boxes of chocolate to everyone.

She also loved animals of all shapes and sizes and was a supporter of many local animal and wildlife charities.

She leaves behind many friends, including her wonderful home health care nurse and best friend, Johanna Tapia.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent in Ruth's name to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter, 100 Caja Del Rio Road, Santa Fe, NM 87507.
