Caruso, Sheila Vaughan

Sheila Vaughan Caruso was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on Wednesday, March 28, 1923 to Thomas and Maureen "Nanny-O" Vaughan.

At age 26, she was married and soon blessed with three sons, Mark, Thomas, and Carl Rhodes. After devoting her youth to raising her boys as a pioneering single mother, she met and married the man of her dreams, Peter Caruso, and began to blossom at age 54. While her formal Irish Catholic upbringing kept her publicly a cheerful and amiable woman, those closest to her will treasure her dry sense of humor, her Twain quotes, and her Sheila-isms. She was an elegant lady and a tough old bird who brought smiles to strangers wherever she went. She loved to travel, meet new people, and try new foods, despite being an infamously poor cook herself, (as she would sheepishly admit). At age 94, she had finally sampled enough of the world for her taste, and on July 27, 2017, she decided to join her parents, her husband, Peter, her sister, Maura, and her son, Carl, in heaven.

She is survived by her sons Mark and Thomas, her grandchildren, Andrea, Jaya, Kyla, and Sean, and her great grandchildren, Lex, Luca, and Liam as well as many great friends.

The family will be celebrating her life in a small, private service on Friday, August 4th in Albuquerque. A public memorial service will be held in West Hartford at the Church of St. Timothy on Friday, August 18th at 10:00 am. As she would reject customary traditions in favor of the opportunity to help someone, in lieu of sending flowers, we ask that she be honored with a donation to be made to any organization that helps women, children, or animals.
