Vicki Sims passed away on January, 24, 2018 in her home. The daughter of Betty and Jim Sims, she was born in Albuquerque, NM and graduated from Highland High School in 1970.

Vicki graduated in 1974 from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC with a degree in nursing. She then moved to Atlanta, GA and briefly worked at Henrietta Egleston Hospital for Children. In 1979, Vicki moved to Houston, TX and began a long career with St. Luke's hospital and later Texas Children's Hospital in the OR. She was honored in 2016 for 35 years of service.

Vicki had a life-long love of nature, animals, camping and adventure. From 1980 to 1998, alongside her day job of nursing, she guided river trips on weekends and holidays with her companion Don Greene, owner of Whitewater Experience. This included trips on the Rio Grande in Big Bend National Park for children from the Kincaid School, with Katherine Latham. One of Vicki's passions was bird watching, and she took numerous trips to birding hot spots throughout the USA, from Central Park in New York City to Magee Marsh in Ohio. She made many friends during her adventures.

Vicki was a generous person who was engaged in many volunteer activities, including serving as a docent at the Houston Zoo, and traveling as an OR nurse with Faith in Practice Mission trips to Third World countries through the Presbyterian Church between 2000 and 2003.

With her love of birding she served as editor of The Spoonbill, the monthly newsletter for the Houston Ornithology Group from August 2011 to September 2013.

She is survived by her brothers, Ed Sims and Barry Sims of Los Lunas; by her five nieces and nephews, Nathaniel Sims, Jeffrey Sims, Clara Sims, Jessica Sims and Amanda Sims; as well as special family friend, Jim Rhodes of Los Lunas.
