Viola Cecelia Werner

November 23, 1923 to August 20, 2016

Our precious mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Viola, died peacefully at age 92 in her Santa Fe home. Viola was born in Albuquerque to John Anthony Werner, Postmaster of Albuquerque, and Maria Ynez del Campo C' de Baca y Romero Werner, a political and social activist. J. A. "Tony" Werner was the son of Tomas Werner and Genoveva Montoya and grandson of Major Melchior Werner, a German immigrant who joined the cavalry in Albuquerque and later became Commander of the Garrison at Old Town. Viola was a musician in her younger years playing cello, participating in the Youth Orchestra at the World's Fair and singing soprano on the radio in Albuquerque. She attended George Washington University in Washington DC where she met her husband, Joseph Murray. Viola is survived by: three daughters, Cathy Barabe of Fresno, CA, Stephanie Harp of Bernalillo, NM, and Kristin Chancellor of Santa Fe, NM; five grandchildren, Becky Barabe, Susan Amador and Jill Waller, all of Fresno, CA, Reese Chancellor and Cherie Chancellor of Santa Fe, NM, and eight great grandchildren, Daniella, Caleb and Grace Amador, Joelle and Joshua Barabe, and Alan, Alyssa and Kristin Chancellor. Viola will be remembered for her pioneer spirit as a woman of independence.

A rosary and mass will be held at the Old San Isidro Church, 3934 Agua Fria Street in Santa Fe, NM, Saturday, September, 10th at 9am. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory be made to Kitchen Angels of Santa Fe; an organization delivering food to home bound individuals for which Viola was both a volunteer driver and a recipient, as a two-time survivor of cancer.
