Zack F. Montoya, 102, was called home to the Lord on May 29, 1916, surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Eloisa; his eldest daughter Clarita Garcia; his sons-in-law Danny Garcia and Pete Gallegos; and his grandson, Mike Garcia.

He is survived by his three children: Carlos and his wife Patti, Nora Juarros and her husband Louis, and Mary Ellen Gallegos; his 11 grandchildren including Trish, his compassionate and loving care giver. Also surviving are his 23 great-grandchildren and his six great-great-grandchildren.

He married the love of his life, Eloisa on December 25, 1938 and they were married 73 years. Zack and Eloisa's favorite ministry was the Marriage Enrichment Program. They lived 140 weekends throughout the state and touched countless lives through their loving example.

Immediately upon high school graduation in 1933, Zack began his long career as an educator with his first teaching job in a one-room schoolhouse in Los Mogotes. He earned his bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees in education from New Mexico Highlands University. During his career he taught school, was a high school principal and retired in 1973 after serving as the Wagon Mound School superintendent for seven years.

Mr. Montoya served in the United States Army during World War II where he continued his educational career as an English as a Second Language instructor. He was honorably discharged on January 5, 1946. In 1973, he was inducted into the Northern New Mexico Educator's Hall of Fame as well as the New Mexico Educator's Hall of Fame. In July of 2012, the Wagon Mound School Board of Education unanimously voted to name the district administration building the Zack and Eloisa Montoya Administration Building. The ceremony and unveiling took place on September 3, 2013. One of the many activities Zack and Eloisa enjoyed the most, besides spending time with their family was traveling extensively in the United States, Canada, and abroad. His community involvement included serving on boards such as the Health Centers of New Mexico and the Senior Citizens Center.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father George V. Salazar at the Santa Clara Parish Church in Wagon Mound, NM on Friday, June 3, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. The interment will follow in the family plot in the Santa Clara Cemetery in Wagon Mound, NM with the following grandchildren serving as casket bearers: Sugie Garcia, Tony Gallegos, Paul Gallegos, Trish Gallegos, P. J. Juarros, LuAnne Sperando, Jon Montoya, and Katie Otero. Honorary bearers will be Patrick Andy Gallegos and Timothy Montoya.
