Pete Domenici Obituary

Domenici, Senator Pete

The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (formerly NARSAD) mourns the passing of our dear friend Senator Pete Domenici. Senator Domenici was unique in his broad ranging support for mental health care and scientific progress. He aided in the development of our institution becoming the largest philanthropic funder of mental health research grants. He served as an honorary chair of our Research Fund Steering Committee along with his wife Nancy. A determined and dedicated leader in Congress on behalf of the mentally ill, he was instrumental in his role in passing one of the most significant mental health bills in US history â€" The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008. Our institution honored him with our Humanitarian Award in 1995 and our first Paul Wellstone Leadership Award in 2005. Senator Domenici was a modest man, but dedicated and tenacious in his advocacy for the mentally ill. He was a true humanitarian who understood the terrible toll that mental illness takes on individuals, families and society and worked tirelessly to relieve suffering and distress. His vision, wisdom and leadership were invaluable to the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation's achievements and our contribution to progress in the field of mental health research. We will miss his powerful support and guidance.

Our deepest condolences are extended to Nancy and the Domenici family.

Dear Nancy and Family;
It is with deep sadness that I learned of Senator Dominici's passing. I met him when I was a Teen Age Republican (TAR)in Farmington, NM in 1972. I voted for him every chance I had when I was living in New Mexico. He was a great statesman, and an asset to conservative Republicans in New Mexico when we were in the minority. I will pray rosaries and offer Masses to his memory. I'll miss you, Senator.

Dear Nancy and all family,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to you. Pete and you were very important in my life and I'm deeply sad to hear of his loss. I have so many good memories. I'm glad that Charles was part of his staff for as long as he was able. Pete had a great impact on many more lives than he ever knew. My prayers and thoughts are with you all at this sorrowful time. I will never forget either of you.

Much of what Pete did for our country and our state will never be credited to him because he worked behind the scenes. He was fearless in defending causes that lesser men were afraid to take on.

I send this picture because it reminds me of Pete's many connections and how he turned them into a beautiful legacy. I am honored and grateful to have known him and I send my deepest sympathy to his family for their loss.

My sincere condolences to Nancy and the children. May your strong Faith be your comfort during this time of sorrow. I taught at Fatima when your children were young. I partnered with you in the education of your children. I celebrated your child's first communion dinner at the Sundowner. Family from Italy was also present that Sunday.
Years later while taking my middles school students to Washington, I bumped into Senator Domenici. We were touring the Capitol when suddenly we were stopped and were told that a press conference would be taking place. The Budget had just been balanced. All the Senators were passing by us. Senator Dominici noticed me with the students. Two proud New Mexicans greeted each other on that historical day!
I am grateful for the many contributions he made in his lifetime.
Rest in Peace, Senator Domenici.

Ben and I had the pleasure of meeting Pete several times when he would go watch his grandson play baseball on the team Ben coached. He was so very proud of him and always enjoyed the games. He took a liking to Brian as well because they both were both left handed pitchers and enjoyed giving Brian good tips. Our sincere condolences to Nancy and his entire family. Our prayers are with you all. Ben and Marijon

I remember the night Senator Domenici was elected...so many years ago...who would have known this young man, Albuquerque's City Manager, would become a much respected Senator. I was only 16 at the time not knowing that I would eventually move to Washington, D.C. and become a Virginian. I worked for the Federal Government for 30 years. I have always been proud of my New Mexico roots and even more so when "Pete" was mentioned in the media. He was "my" Senator regardless of my residence. I was sadden when he left the Senate and even more of his passing. I wish peace to the Domenici family.
Warmest Regards,

Condolences to the Domenici family. Pete was a friend to our family and to me - Nancy and Pete let me work out of their Capitol Hill house when I went to Washington as a reporter for The Toledo (Oh) Blade to cover Barack Obama's inaugurations. I was so appreciative of the Domenicis and the family sharing their home with me. Reading Senator Pete's obituary told me many things about his accomplishments that were new to me, despite knowing him a long time. Last night I watched an hour-long interview with him, filmed in his last year as a Senator, on PBS. Well worth watching. His interests and areas of expertise really benefited our country as a whole and we're lucky the people of New Mexico put their trust in him. We in the Troy family got to know the Domenicis because my sisters and his daughters went to the same school and played sports together. Now Helen is married to my brother Jim. My sincere condolences and love to you all.

Nancy and family, So sorry. Pete will be missed and remembered by all who knew him. He was a special man.
Jack first met him and his fast ball when quaking and he struck him out in the City League.
Once, when in Washington, and visiting him Jack had to lend him his tie clasp for his meeting in the Senate.
We have many stories with you two and wonderful memories. Have recalled so many of them.
God bless you and your family.

Prayers and condolences to Nancy and family of Pete Domenici. I have such good memories of his campaign for Governor in 1970, serving as one of the many friends on the campaign trail in Roswell NM and Chavez County. Pete and Nancy were always gracious and grateful for anything done to help . Alas we lost that time though we did carry Chavez County , a real coup for the Republican party! That was just the beginning for Pete and his political career. Thank you for the years served not only by Pete but by his loving and supporting family. He was a loyal friend and devoted Patriot to his Country. He will be missed though fondly remembered.

Our family had the pleasure of visiting Senator Domenici in 1992 when my son Justin won a trip to Washington D.C. for his 'baseball' related invention for 'Invent America'. The Senator graciously excused himself to 'go vote' before we could see him, but returned and visited with Justin about his invention and told him about his own career in baseball which had been cut short by an injury.
He said baseball was his first love, but joked that he "settled later on for a career in politics!"
He made us feel welcome that summer afternoon 25 years ago.
May you Rest in Peace Pete Domenici.
