Bernard Johnstone

THE last chairman of Church Urban District Council, Mr Bernard Joseph Johnstone, has died in the Royal Blackburn Hospital aged 81.

Mr Johnstone, of Dill Hall Lane, Church, was a Labour member of the council for 25 years until it merged into the new Hyndburn Council in 1974.

He worked as a fireman at Accrington for 30 years and was a piper with the Accrington Pipe Band.

The husband of the late Gladys, he leaves his partner Florence, children Lynn and Andrew, son-in-law Geoff, daughter-in-law Barbara, grandchildren Howard, Gail and Ursula and great-grandson Dylan.

Father Neville Ashton conducted a funeral service at St James Church Kirk before cremation at Accrington. Arrangements: Wolstenholme’s.
