Philip Hardie Obituary

Philip William Hardie Jr., M.D., died Aug. 2, 2008, at a hospice in Scottsdale, Ariz., of metastatic prostate cancer. He was 87.
A family memorial service will be later, most likely in San Diego, Calif., near the ocean he so loved.
Dr. Hardie was born July 25, 1921, in Greensboro, N.C., to Philip William and Mary Adele Hardie.
He began his academic career studying civil engineering at the University of North Carolina, and earned his medical degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was a colonel in the U.S. Army, practicing as a physician, and later earned a master's degree in health care administration at the University of Hawaii. He became an associate professor in health care in Truk, Micronesia, and later established the first hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, while stationed there with the Army. He was also stationed in Texas, California, Washington, Germany and Alaska.
He was invited to become the medical director of the Alyeska pipeline in June 1975. There he facilitated the health care of the thousands of workers along the pipeline. In the late 1970s, he became medical director of Alaska Psychiatric Institute. He was appointed the state medical director in early 1980 in Juneau.
He split his retirement years between Anchorage and Scottsdale. He loved tennis, golf, traveling and sailing around the world.
He had a rich and fulfilling life and career.
Dr. Hardie is survived by his sisters, Katherine Edwards of La Jolla, Calif., and Adele Byrne of Palm Springs, Calif.; first wife, Irene Feggestad Hardie; and their daughters, Mary Alyce Hardie and her son Teddy Hardie-Lee, and Ann Elizabeth Hardie-Domann and her sons, John, Mark and Paul, all of Madison, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Irmgard Lederer Hardie.
He is survived by their son, William Bruce Hardie of Clearwater, Fla.
He is survived by his third wife, Gray Ligon of Raleigh, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his fourth wife, Janice Kastella, M.D.
He is survived by Janice's son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Karlta Kastella, and their children, Keilor and Kahli, all of Ann Arbor, Mich.

My condolences to Dr. Hardie's family, loved one's and friends, during your loss. I had the honor of knowing Dr. Hardie in the 70's and 80's, he always had a smile and asked how you were doing.
