Long time Anchorage, Alaska, resident Alden R. Mowry, 94, died on March 9, 2018, at his home in Anchorage.
A service will be held on Saturday March 17, 2018, at Scenic Park Bible Church, 7145 Madelynne Drive in Anchorage, at 1 p.m. A potluck meal will immediately follow the service.
Mr. Mowry was born on June 2, 1923, in Chicago, Ill., to Arlie and Harry Mowry, soon after his family moved to South Orange, N.J. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1941, and attended Casey Jones School of Aeronautics in Newark, N.J. He married Charlotte "Flossie" Thwing on June 6, 1951, in Seattle, Wash. He and Flossie came to Alaska in May 1964, where he worked for Wilbur's Flight Operations as their Chief Flight Instructor. From 1968 to 2005, he was an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner. He worked at several other aviation companies in Anchorage and retired from Land and Sea Aviation Alaska in 2015. He was awarded The Wright Brothers "Master Pilot" Award for 50 consecutive years of safe aircraft operations. In his years of flying, he earned over 34,000 hours of flying time.
Al's family wrote: "Al was a patient, caring and faithful man that loved the Lord and constantly sought the Lord's leading in his life. He will be remembered for his bright smile, his true love of everything pertaining to aviation and his devotion to his wife of 66-1/2 years and his daughters."
He is survived by his wife, Flossie; his daughter, Janet and her husband Tom Markwardt and her two children Emma and Ben of Seattle, Wash.; and his daughter, Jennifer and her husband, Eric Van Blaricom of Dallas, Texas.
Al and Jennifer were greatly comforted and cared for by hospice RN Case Manager, Jeff, in the final days of his life and would like to have donations go to Providence Hospice, 4001 Dale St., Suite 101, Anchorage, AK 99508, in lieu of flowers.
