Carl William Merculief Sr., 69, passed peacefully at home to his death on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, surrounded by his family.
Carl was born on St. George Island, Alaska, on July 28, 1948. His mom was MaryJane Merculief: Jan. 25, 1926 - Aug. 3, 1997. His dad was Terenty J. Merculief: April 1, 1926 - Jan. 18, 2000.
He met the love of his life, his wife, Katherine Louise Merculief, daughter of Matrona Kozloff, and they married on Friday, Nov. 13, 1970. Carl is a Vietnam veteran who proudly served his country in the United States Army from '69-'72. Carl loved to work with his hands: from fixing vehicles, building houses, flying different types of airplanes, hunting, fishing and a man considered a jack-of-all-trades. He loved to laugh, tell stories, go fishing and camping with his family, and most of all grandkids; he always had the scariest campfire stories, the craziest adventure stories and the heart stopping flying stories that he loved to share with all his family and friends. He loved to dance with his wife, who passed before him last year 2016, and watch news and drama shows with her. His favorite saying was "son of a bitch," with a couple more too intense to mention, but he sure could swear like a sailor. He is the epitome of a true Alaskan Man: rough, tough, and very caring under all that toughness.
Carl is survived by his two brothers, John R and Terenty; his sister, Lillian and her husband Ernest; his sister, Ruby and her husband Darren; his sister, Gollie and her husband Phil; his son, Chris and Mylinda Merculief; his daughter, MaryJane Merculief and Roy; his daughter, Samantha and Thomas Bourdukofsky; his son, Carl Merculief Jr.; his daughter, Nina and Brian Berry; and his baby, Tabitha and Michael Carter. Together, Katherine and Carl have 19 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his mom; dad; brothers and sisters; and the love of his life, wife Katherine "Babe" Merculief.
He is proud of all his family and their significant others- and wanted them all to know that - between him and his wife - they've created a beautiful family to continue creating great memories, stories, life lessons and cement the family bond they worked their life time creating for themselves and all of their children and grandchildren.
