A loving and kind man with a gentle spirit walked into the gates of heaven on Sept. 30, 2014. Charley Jerling, beloved husband of Susan Jerling and a wonderful dad to Charley Jr., will be remembered by all who knew him as a kind and generous man. He was born in Kodiak, Alaska, on July 6, 1930. Charley spent most of his youth in Kodiak. He was known as a good basketball player in high school and early adult years. He was a commercial fisherman. Charley met Susan in Kodiak, where they began a lifetime union together. They started a business together called Turf Cardroom after they moved to Anchorage, Alaska, until recent February. From 1997-1999 he lost both legs due to diabetes, but that didn't slow him down. Charley's mood never altered. He was the same cheerful man he always was, greeting his customers with a warm welcome and a smile. Charley loved card games, but also enjoyed watching his son play basketball and watching sports on TV, especially wrestling. He is survived by his wife, Susan Jerling; and son, Charles Jerling Jr. Charley's honorary pallbearers are Ron Burnsteen and Patsy Cronin. His active pallbearers will be: Gary Gordon, James Sabon, Alan Christiansen, Irving Jackson, Daryl Burnsteen and Donald Johns. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Susan Jerling. You may contact her by her cellphone. A public visitation will be held at Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St., on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at 1 p.m. - 2 p.m., and a funeral service will follow immediately after. Charley will be laid to rest at the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery on Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, at 10 a.m. Arrangements were by Janssen Funeral Homes.
