Longtime Anchorage resident, Derek Aaron Stedingh, 41, a shining light in our lives, passed away on Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, in Anchorage, Alaska. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at the Chapel of the Cross Church, located at 12230 Hillside Drive in Anchorage, available at 345-4553. Pastor Gene Rosebecke will officiate. Derek was born on Feb. 9, 1973, to Kurt W. and Carol Ann (Brown) Stedingh in Anchorage, Alaska. He attended Service High School and then was home schooled by his parents the last two years, receiving a state diploma. Derek worked for Northern Slope Telecom from February 2012 to August 2013, and then for Westower Communication until December of 2013. He was a member of the Chapel of the Cross Church. "Derek was always an extremely talented and competent athlete. He played soccer, competed in track and field, was a figure skater, ice dancer, mountain biker and mountaineer. His athletic endeavors required him to travel to attend various competitions and obtain advanced athletic skill throughout the Yukon Territory, Canada, all over the 'Lower 48' and Europe. Derek also had a great fondness for the outdoors. He liked to hunt and fish, was an avid mountaineer and just generally liked being in the outdoors. Derek was an extremely social and compatible person who enjoyed the companionship of his many friends. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and will be greatly missed," wrote the family. Derek is survived by his grandparents, Kurt W. and Veronica J. Stedingh of Voorhees, N.J.; parents, Kurt W. Stedingh Jr. and Carol A. Stedingh of Anchorage, Alaska; brother and sister in-law, Donald M. and Carolyn Stedingh of Anchorage; nephew, Dakota Stedingh of Anchorage; and nieces, Mycla, Cheyenne and Autumn Stedingh all of Anchorage.
