Anchorage resident, Jose Mulligan Abes, 83, died peacefully at the Providence Hospital, Anchorage, Alaska. He was surrounded by his loving family and closest friends as he joined his Creator on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014.

Jose was born in the Philippines on December 23, 1930. He completed his degree in Doctor of Medicine in the Philippines with a 4-year undergraduate degree at the University of the Philippines and a 4-year graduate degree at the University of Santo Tomas. He began his 18-year medical career in 1967 as a civilian physician with the United States Naval Hospital, Subic Bay, Philippines from which he retired as the Head of Occupational Health Medicine. Upon migration to the Unites States in 1984, he completed an additional 13-year state medical service at the Washington State Corrections Center, Shelton, Washington from which he earned a second retirement. He had many civic and charitable memberships. One of his passions was his involvement with the Knights of Columbus. He was ordained in 1968, became a past Grand Knight of Olongapo Council 3722, a Charter Grand Knight of Saint Rita Council 7876, and a Past Faithful Navigator of the Bishop Ma. Guerrero Assembly of the 4th Degree in Olongapo City, Philippines. Recently, he belonged to the Saint Francis of Assissi Assembly of the 4th Degree in Olympia, Washington. He has a total of 45 years of continuous membership with the Order and an Honorary Life Member of both the Council and the Assembly. Few hours before his death, his faithful brother in Christ and friend pinned him with a Silver Knight award.

Among his beloved family and friends, he was warmly known as "Joe." His character embodied intelligence, kindness, compassion, nobility, humility, and sincerity. "He is a very loving father, a great provider, firm yet forgiving, passionate about education, and very strong in his faith in God. He is incredibly organized and meticulous. Our dad is truly one of a kind", shared by his daughters. Jose also enjoyed the company of his grandchildren who adored him and fondly called him Papa Smurf. A few moments spent with him and his wife quickly reveals his deep love and respect for his beloved wife of 56 years, Sophia, whom he constantly concerned himself with until his last breath. They're inseparable according to his daughters.

Jose is survived by his loving wife, Sophia (Alaska); his four daughters Emmeline Verano and Arlene Cruz (Philippines) , Leah Van Sandt (Alaska), and Nerissa Lancendorfer and her husband Robert (Washington); his three brothers Roberto and Marino Abes with his wife Aurora (Philippines), and Rolando Abes with his wife Eunesie (California); his seven grandchildren Brian Verano, Porferio Verano, and Lyndon Cruz (Philippines), Ryan Guzman, Cesar Guzman, and Jordan Brackins (Alaska), and Eric Guzman with his wife Jeanette, and great-grandson Aleksander (Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana). He has living nephews and nieces too many to mention but are remembered with importance.

Jose was preceded in death by his parents Saturnino and Ella Mulligan Abes, his sister Julia Falcon, his brother Lope Abes, his three siblings who died in their infancy; Virginia, Alberto, and Edna Abes (Philippines) and his son-in-law, Larry Van Sandt (Alaska).
