Kevin John Sykes was born on Feb. 7, 1961, to Augusta Reimer and Henry Sykes during a snowstorm on Long Island, N.Y. He was delivered in the same hospital - South Hampton - where Jackie Kennedy was born.
Kevin had suffered a series of strokes since 2010, and died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Feb. 15, 2017, at Prestige nursing home in Anchorage, Alaska, nearly 20 years to the day of the death of the Inupiaq maternal grandmother he loved so much. We do believe she "called him home." Kevin attended East Anchorage High in Anchorage and graduated from Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, Wash.
Kevin was an exceptionally talented executive chef and could cook gourmet foods like Julia Child. He had a more excellent education, at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., than many people are privileged to get. There he learned every aspect of food and cooking that can be imagined. At one point he had an opportunity to be chef at The White House, but he declined. His work mainly centered in the Seattle area, where he lived much of his life, earning several "best chef in the Pacific Northwest" awards. He used to watch his maternal grandmother in the kitchen, standing on a stool next to the stove helping her make berry jam, and that inspired him to become a chef.
A beautiful little boy and handsome adult man, women of all ages fell for him and his charm. Kevin was a passionate skier especially with his brother, Josh, and best friend, Steve. He trained and showed German shepherd dogs; he enjoyed work in the media, like radio announcing. And he treasured his daughter, Kelsie, whom he called "Honeybee."
Kevin leaves, in Anchorage, his mother, Augusta; his sisters, Kimberly and Karen Sykes; his niece, Rachel Corona and her husband Andres; his nephew, Jason and Jason's father David Rourke; his cousins, Robert, Holly and Anthony Reimer; and his childhood friend, Annette Mendel Broste; in Washington state, his daughter, Kelsie Sykes and Kelsie's mother and grandmother Joyce and Dee Hamilton; his brother, Josh Sykes; and stepmother, Loisanne Sykes; his uncle and aunt, John and Catherine Reimer; his aunt, Bonita Atkinson; and best friend, Steve Smith; in California, his sister, Katherine Fowler; and childhood friend, Dean Mendel; in Florida, his brother, Gregg Harvey; and in Georgia, his uncle, Frederick Sykes.
He is predeceased by his father, Henry Sykes; his paternal grandmother, Jane Lofaro; his maternal grandparents, John and Sarah Bernhardt Reimer; and his two cousins, Jerry and Darren Atkinson.
Donations in Kevin's memory can be sent to Augusta Reimer, 4203 Wilson Street, #13, Anchorage, AK 99503.
