Long time Alaskan Larry Arend, resident of Anchorage and Peters Creek, Alaska, passed away on July 31, 2017, with his wife of 54 years, Liz, by his side. His death came about after a courageous seven-month battle with cancer. Liz was always by his side throughout his illness. Larry's children and grandchildren were always there as well, to hold his hand and offer words of encouragement and love.
Larry was born to Maurice and Bonnie Arend in Quincy, Ill. When he was still in grade school his family moved to California, where he spent his younger years. He met and married his wife, Liz, while attending college in Redding, Calif. They had three children: Jon, Dan and Michelle. The family moved to Alaska, in 1972, and Larry worked at Montgomery Ward department store. He joined the Anchorage Police Department in 1978, became a homicide detective and retired after 22 years. He worked many well-known cases in Anchorage and was highly respected by his peers.
Larry leaves behind a rich and enduring legacy for his growing family. He was their mentor, leader and touchstone. By example, he taught his kids how to be good parents and raise their families. Most importantly, he taught them how to love and what it feels like to be loved.
Ultimately, he showed them what true strength was in the face of adversity and how to stay brave even when all seemed hopeless.
He loved his wife, Liz, of 54 years, with all his heart and always did his best to see that she had everything she needed. There was never a question or hesitation: his love for her was complete. To his kids, he was everything. He was the one they called when they had a question or needed advice. To his grandkids, he was "Poppie"; to his kids, he was just good ol' Pop. He will be missed terribly.
Larry is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Liz"; children, Jon Arend and wife Shawna, Dan Arend and wife Tina, and Michelle Warthen and husband Bob; grandchildren, Jennifer and Grant Arend, Courtney and McKayla Hughes, Luke and AJ Warthen and Henry, Hayden and Claire Arend; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Kell Laderer; and sisters, Sandra Timm and Nancy Stuck.
A funeral service will be held at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 16300 Domain Lane in Eagle River, Alaska, on Aug. 9, 2017, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Andrew Catholic Church building fund.
