Long time Alaska resident Laurel Lee Holmes died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018, at her home in Anchorage, Alaska.
A service will be held at the Legacy Heritage Chapel at Angelus, 440 East Klatt Road in Anchorage, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018. A reception will follow the service at the Al Aska Shrine Center, 1930 East Northern Lights Blvd.
Laurel was born on Dec. 18, 1939, in Endicott, N.Y., and came to Alaska in 1946, first living in a tent in Mountain View and then moving to Seward, Alaska, where she resided until 1964. She moved to Anchorage after the 1964 earthquake.
Laurel retired from V.F. Grace in February 2016. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and spending time with her ever-growing family.
She was a member of Denali Chapter No. 16, Order of the Eastern Star; the Pioneers of Alaska, Seward Igloo #9; and was a longtime supporter of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, on both a local and statewide level.
Her family wrote: "Mom was a strong, resilient woman. She had a heart of gold, lived with integrity and if you were lucky enough to be a part of her circle, you were truly blessed."
She is survived by four daughters, Sandra Thompson-Wallace, Wendy Holmes, Toni Wert and Vickie Throm; nine grandchildren, Kristen Holmes-Ryder, Faelyn Simpson, Lacy Pike, Brianna Francione, Desha Holmes, John Spelta, Rachel Lee, Jacob Wert and Abram Throm; as well as 18 great-grandchildren.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to a favorite .
