Robert Jacob Wienhold passed away at his home in Eagle River, Alaska, on Jan. 20, 2018, at the age of 87. Survivors include three daughters, Lisa of Birmingham, Ala., Kathleen of Cambridge, Mass., and Maria (Raynes) of Eagle River; as well as brother, Ron of Little Sauk, Minn.; and sister, Carole (Helliwell) of Plymouth, Minn.; three grandchildren; and three nieces.
Bob was born in Long Prairie, Minn., was captain of the football team and class president, graduated from State Cloud State University and Southern Illinois University. Called up during the Korean Conflict, he was a front-line combat veteran as a Master Sergeant in his tank group. Following Korea, Bob taught secondary school in Japan, Germany, and the state of Washington. But Bob's love of the outdoors brought him to Alaska in 1964 to work for the Interior Department.
Bob was very proud of his daughters' accomplishments, as well as his brother, Ron; sister, Carole; and his grandchildren and nieces. An avid sportsman and environmentalist, he often spoke about the changes to Alaska and concerns for the natural resources and beauty of the state.
He will be missed.
Services and interment ceremony have been held at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
