Rosemary Katherine Pickles died on Dec. 21, 2018, in Anchorage, Alaska, at the age of 94, after a long illness. She was born in Castroville, Texas, on Oct. 6, 1924, to Joseph and Elizabeth Tondre, and was the youngest of five siblings. She remained in Castroville until the end of World War II, when she briefly married and worked at the navel yard in Bremerton, Wash. After the war she moved back to Texas, where she married Edwin Pipkin in 1950. In 1953, with their one-year-old daughter, they traveled the Alcan Highway, reestablishing themselves in Anchorage, where they would have another daughter and three sons. During this time Rosemary worked as a secretary at Elmendorf Air Force Base and later at the family pawnshop. After her 1974 divorce she worked as a secretary for the Alaska Army National Guard until she retired. In 1985, she married Stanley Pickles and worked with him in his boat parts store until they retired in the early 2000s.
In her later years she suffered from dementia, which was severely exacerbated by a broken hip she suffered in 2011. An invalid, she survived under the attentive care of her youngest son, Billy, who allowed her to see last years.
Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents; her four brothers, Victor, Claude, Clement and Aelred; her husbands; and her son, Robert Pipkin.
She is survived by her daughters, Debra Ferguson-Jones (Wayne) of Renton, Wash., and Judy of Bothell, Wash.; her sons, Mark Pipkin and Billy Pipkin (Grace), both of Anchorage; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
