Stephen "Sluggo" Hunter Routh, 20, passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 2, 2016. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016, at St. John United Methodist Church, 1801 O'Malley Road in Anchorage, Alaska. Reception to follow. Stephen was born on Sept. 4, 1995, a true Labor Day baby, and has been a life long Alaska resident. He attended Pacific Northern Academy through middle school, and graduated from South Anchorage High School in 2013. Stephen participated in the Cook Inlet Soccer Club and was a member of the 2008 Alaska State Cup Championship Velocity Blue U-14B team. Stephen developed a passion for health and fitness while in his senior year and was a dedicated user of the weight room at South High. He enjoyed mentoring special needs students in Mr. Kirn's P.E. class, which made him more aware of the importance of good health no matter what your abilities are. It carried on after graduation where he spent a majority of his free time training at Southside Strength and Fitness. He was particularly struck by the competitive mentality and work ethic of the young Special Olympics athletes who were training there. Stephen was currently working on his degree in Physical Therapy at the University of Alaska Anchorage, receiving high marks, with aspirations of furthering his education in Florida or New York to acquire his Ph.D. Stephen loved to travel and most recently spent time with his father and brother visiting his great grandfather's ancestral region of Alpirsbach, Germany, and also England and France. He was particularly enthralled by the impressionist paintings including those by Pissarro and Renoir at the Louvre. Stephen enjoyed lifting weights and spending time online with his gaming community, most recently playing League of Legends. He also had an affinity for all animals great and small, and especially enjoyed playing with his Pomeranian, Kodi. Stephen is survived by his parents, Stephen and Jo Ann; sister, Rhiannon; brother, Dylan; grandmother, Emiko Yata; uncle James and aunt Jan Baldwin; uncle, Wayne Yata; uncle, Donald Yata; cousin, Michael Baldwin; cousin, Renee Edwards; and many other numerous relatives.
