Thomas Karl Shoemake, 65, passed away on Friday, June 17, 2016, in Anchorage, Alaska, surrounded his loving family and close friends. Thomas was born on April 7, 1951, in Atlanta, Ga., to George Thomas and Friederike Maria Shoemake (Borek). At 2 months of age, his family moved to Munich, Germany, where his family resided until graduating from Munich American High School in 1969. He was an All-European Athlete and excelled in wrestling and football. After high school, his family moved to Lake Tahoe, Calif., where Tom found his love for the outdoors. In his early 20s, he traveled to Alaska, where he met his wife, Deonne Shoemake. They lived in Girdwood, Alaska, for several years before building a home in Anchorage, where they have resided ever since. Tom had multiple careers over the course of his life, including 30 years for Spenard Builders, General Contractor / Custom Home Builder and was currently nearing retirement at AT&T. Tom lived life to the fullest. He had many different hobbies and shared them with all the special people in his life. He enjoyed golfing, watching football, tinkering in his boat, building homes, barbecuing and making custom margaritas. Tom had a great love for the outdoors. Throughout his years of fatherhood, he shared this love with his family and friends where they have many fond memories of skiing, fishing, boating, camping and sitting around a campfire. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, George and Frieda; and his middle brother, Randy Shoemake. He is survived by his wife, Deonne; his two children, Rachel and Zac Shoemake; granddaughter, Braelyn Shoemake; brother and sister-in-law, Robin and Cay Shoemake; nieces, Sarah and Danielle Shoemake; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Gary Whitsell; nephews, Gregory, Bennett and Daniel Whitsell; and many more extended family and friends. Tom will be remembered as a loving son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather and friend. He was known for his exceptional work ethic and his tendency to always put others before himself. He was truly an extraordinary person. His family and friends will miss him dearly but know that he will be with us always.
