Michael Johnson Obituary

Michael Paul Johnson passed away on March 15, 2015, at the age of 32. Mike was born at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas, and moved to Chugiak, Alaska, when he was 2 years old. Mike attended Chugiak Elementary, Gruening Middle School and graduated from Chugiak High School. He studied across the country and abroad in Victoria, British Columbia, and Australia before graduating from the University of Alaska Anchorage with a degree in Journalism. Mike was a general contractor who ran his own business, HammerDown Contractors. He worked on all kinds of projects across Alaska, but died at Providence Hospital as a result of a tragic accident at his home in Eagle River. Mike's passions were traveling the world, fishing and hunting, all sports and anything with a motor. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, North and Central America, and Africa. Whether scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef or on a hunting safari in Africa, Mike lived his life with passion. Mike talked at length about all the future trips he would take, including sailing the world with his daughter. He fished almost daily year round and somehow always managed to find the lucky fishing hole. Mike lived more in his 32 years than most people do in a lifetime. His endless desire for adventure was a constant source of joy, entertainment and excitement to those who knew him. Mike rarely spent a night in; he went fishing at midnight, was camping constantly and was always surrounded by his many friends. He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Madison Faith Johnson; father, David Johnson; mother, Cindy Johnson; grandmother, Joan Richert; brother, Joe and his wife, Hannah; and sister, Anne and her husband, Jason. He is also survived by his beloved niece and nephew, Sterling and Mircea; numerous aunts; uncles; and cousins; and his girlfriend, Amanda Aafedt. Arrangements are with Janssen's Eagle River Funeral Home.

Michael you are one of the greats. I always looked up to you. You taught me so much in carpentry and in life. I wanted to be just like you. I always appreciated the times we had with hammer down and out at your house in the ranch. Love you man. Hope one day I can return the love you´ve shown me. Greatest carpenter I´ve ever known. Absolute Legend!!

Tragic to hear of the passing of a young fracking engineer. Michael "Iceman" Johnson truly represents what Mr. Trump calls our future of entrepreneurs. God bless.

Mike absolutely radiated with zest and charm. I can't think of a single memory from school hood days where Mike was serious, wore of a frown, was even slightly downcast. He was constantly smiling, chuckling, joking. I had the pleasure of running into Mike the past few summers when I was home visiting (both times on my birthday nonetheless- lucky me!) and got to drink a beer and bowl with him at Homesteader's. It was so fun to catch up with Mike. He was one of those few spirits who makes the ground you walk upon feel lighter after an encounter with him. And that is one of the greatest gifts you can give this world. Thank you Mike.

I am so sorry Johnson family. Mike was a truly bright light on this earth, and amazing man. The entire Johnson family is in my heart and thoughts.

They say only time can heal the loss of a loved one. I have many, many memories of my time spent with Mike, dancing the night away, making dinner/breakfast together, fishing! Anyone that knew Mike knows that fishing was one of his joys, he was more excited then I was, when I caught that 1st fish, drinking wine while taking a ride on his canoe, Oh the many memories... What I will cherish the most is our long long conversations, especially that last one a few days before the tragic accident.
He was a unique individual no doubt, I'll carry a part of him with me always, to infinity and beyond! RIP

Dear Michael, I may have met your dad on a plane flying over AK, where God vacations, as my own son says. Reading about Michael is like reading about my two sons. Being around the two of them is pure joy and more hilarious than any sitcom. I am so sorry for your loss David and for that of your family. Michael seems to be a lot like you because talking with you on that plane was like I had known you for years. In AK you are as close to heaven and your son as you will ever be.

The world was a better place with you in it. I miss your hugs, your smile, your laughter.. Late night hikes, bonfires, playing guitar and singing. The best dance partner I've ever had! The day you made me realize I was better than I thought to be, that day you changed my life for better forever. Sledding on deflated intertubes and bruising our rear ends!!! Jumping on the bed w Ollie like little kids ;) listening to music and dancing our hearts out! All the delicious dinners you cooked, teaching me how to throw a bowl on the wheel, your amazing smoked salmon... The day you called to tell me you were a daddy. The best daddy in the world! I will remember our little adventures and hold them close to my heart forever. Cindy, thank you for bringing such a wonderful and amazing man into this world, who changed so many peoples lives for the better. michael was truely a blessing. My condolences and prayers go out to your family.

I will love and miss you Always and forever.. Until we meet again ;)

He lived at the top of the world, the place you at which you might arrive after a long journey, but at an accelerated rate for someone the likes of Mike Johnson. It looks out over the very best of the natural world, and a place to view and take stock of the world, as others are taking their turns below. It is a place at which few people arrive, and usually after a lifetime of struggle, a place to review and contemplate the next steps, there at the toppest top. Not just a physical location, but a mental and emotional state of being, a state of growth seldom achieved, particularly by one so young. Grand and comprehensive, but also a place for unpretentious, cozy, glowing living, someplace for the soul to explore the ins and outs, follies and foibles, depths and glory of how a shining star goes about fully and truly negotiating life.

Mike lived the daily example of how to become a broader character altogether, how it is that one might do that. He lived and breathed the answer to the question, tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life.

And he has managed to figure out how to live two lives in one, in this world and the next, as he is still just ahead of us all, acknowledging all of the journey, the best, the worst of what it takes to be at such a state of being, the truest example of how to really live each day to the fullest, no matter what, a very impressive young man.

I will always remember the special memories of him growing up, the sights and sounds of a life unfolding, the curious and keen intelligence, such a reader, a voracious appetite for learning and excelling, the shining smiles, infectious laughter, his special movements and energy, the extraordinarily joyful living and sharing. It is a gift that I will always cherish, and that I, and my family, have had the privilege of sharing. The place in my heart is filled with warmth and richness from the experience. I am so thankful for the gift. I can't imagine how empty that place would be without it. He is not the kind of person you just forget about.

Mikey, I will always love, cherish, and absolutely adore you. I miss you SO MUCH already. I will miss hearing about all of the things you do. I pray and beseech the heavens to take very best care of you always and forever after.

I salute you now and always, and look forward to meeting again one day in raucous, joyous party. And fireworks, yes, let there be joyful and glorious fireworks filling up the sky, for the pure joy of all of the precious gifts that you have given, still continuing on.

This one's for you, Mikey. If the heavens ever did speak, he's the last true mouthpiece.

We will always have special thoughts of our family's time with Michael in Costa Rica. His Spanish and comfort with other cultures kept us from becoming hopelessly lost and more able to relax and enjoy the country, people and culture. Memories of bathing in the hot springs from the Arenal volcano to zip lining down a mountainside become even more precious. We were so fortunate to participate in his zest for life. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. The Pies family, St. Louis, Missouri

When someone you love dies , you never quite get over it.
You just slowly learn how to go on without them.
As you slowly learn to go on without Michael, you have help, our Heavenly Father. You have but to ask. He says "I have heard your prayers, I have seen your tears" I will heal you. 2 Kings 20:5.

That big ol' grin and that loud roaring cheer during our high school soccer games...that's what I will remember about Mike. He was such a force of nature, you couldn't help but feel energized in his presence. Johnson family, I know words can never express nor replace the loss you've endured, but you all are in my thoughts and prayers.
