Ernie Chacon Obituary
Long-time Mendocino County resident, Ernie Chacon of Philo, passed away on Nov. 27, 2019, in Tucson, Arizona. He was 89.
Ernie was born Ernest Richard Theodore Chacon in Los Angeles, California, on Sept. 4, 1930, to Fern Ellen Baker and Ernest Chacon.
A graduate of North Hollywood High School, he attended Los Angeles Valley College. In 1964, he began work with NBC News in Burbank as a soundman. In 1976, he became a videographer and worked both network and local KNBC stories. He had covered some of the most prominent news stories of the '60s, '70s and '80s.
In 1990, he and his wife moved to Philo, California, where he built - almost single-handedly - a Japanese pole house overlooking the "Deep End" of the Anderson Valley. At his death, he and his wife were living in Tucson, Arizona.
Ernie is survived by his wife of 47 years, Giovanna Nigro Chacon, a 19-year realtor at Mendo Realty; son, Michael E. Chacon, of Boise, Idaho; and daughter, Lisa Seberger, of Las Vegas, Nevada. He leaves 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Cathryn Chacon Valenzuela; three nieces, and five great-grandnephews. A son, Stephen, and a daughter, Natalie, predeceased him.
A funeral Mass will be said for the repose of his soul at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Tucson, Arizona, on Friday, Dec. 20, 2019, at 10 a.m.
