John Tally, oh so loved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend passed in his sleep on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013. John was a devoted family man with a passion for his children, grandchildren and cooking.
He was born in Tularosa to Nancy and Harvey Tally on Jan. 15, 1968. He grew up on ranches in Three Rivers and Hondo with his sister (Brenda Smith) and brother (David Tally) before his family settled in Tularosa during his teenage years. During this time, his youngest brother (Frank Tally) was born.
John was active in FFA during high school and was the Tularosa Chapter president during his senior year. He started his career during this time working for the Van Winkles IGA for over 10 years.
He and his wife, Denice, married in the spring of 1993 and during their 20-year marriage they lived mainly in Tularosa and Phoenix.
John had a close relationship with his mother, they spoke almost daily and he enjoyed going to yard sales with his mother and grandmother (Virginia Vigil). He passed this tradition on to his daughters (Margaret Vazquez and Thena Tally), and they spent many Saturdays in search of things they just couldn't live without.
He loved practical jokes. Once a year for the first 10 years of his marriage, he called his mother-in-law (Johnnie King) and tearfully explained that Denice was pregnant again. She fell for it every time even when it wasn't true. This trait he shared with his son (Quinten Tally) and they were always looking for a way to trick mom.
Last year, John's daughter Margaret and her husband (Rick Vazquez) gave him a grandson, Casper. He was fortunate in that he spent his last months with Casper, who was the light of his life.
John spent numerous hours looking at recipes and we wish he had more time to make them rather than just post them on Facebook. John worked hard and was a very supportive husband and father. He was our rock and we will miss him forever.
We invite you to join us in a celebration of his life at the Elk's Lodge, 2290 Hamilton Rd., from 1:30-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013.
In lieu of flowers or donations, the family is asking that you bring a side dish or desert from the ones that John posted on Facebook, or another you thought he would enjoy. Our plan is to try all the recipes he wanted but never had the time to cook.

John,
We only grew up together a short while. I remember visiting you at IGA when i was a little girl. The last time i saw you was in Phoenix with Rae-Rae and you cooked us enchiladas with the red chile Harvey sent you. Even though we did not spend much time together you always treated Rae-Rae and I like you saw us everyday. We love you and miss you.
Cousins,
Rae-Rae and Amber Reeves
