Retired from the civil service
Mary Downing, 74, of Alamogordo, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Sierra Medical Center in El Paso, Texas.
Mary was born Sept. 6, 1933. in Davenport, Iowa, to Francis and Martha (Lohse) Bartley. She retired in 1988 from the civil service at Holloman Air Force Base, where she had been a claims adjuster in the office of the Judge Advocate General.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where she was a eucharistic minister; a former secretary of the Altar Rosary Society at St. Jude Mission; a Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society member at New Mexico State University-Alamogordo, where she received an associate's degree; and a former member of the Chaparral Kennel Club.
Survivors include her husband of 28 years Buddy Alexander, of the family home; two sons, Scott Downing and James Coomes; a sister, Joan Guffey and her husband Carroll, of Cherokee, Okla.; and a brother, Frank Bartley, of Cherokee.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Jeri Garrison.
A vigil service will be conducted Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rosary to be recited by Vanita Chelgren.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. with Father Bryant Hausfeld, O.F.M., as celebrant.
Inurnment will follow in the St. Jude Columbarium.
Services are under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
