Robert T. Williams, Sr., 87, passed away on June 3, 2014, in Alamogordo. He was born on Oct. 27, 1926, in Atlanta, Ga. to Robert and Madelaine Somes Sanderson Williams.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Betty J. Williams of the family home; son, Robert Thomas Williams Jr. and wife Cathy of Boles Acres; son, Kenneth Campbell Williams and wife Gina of Nampa, Idaho; ten grandchildren, Sandra, Deanna, Jeramy, Melissa, Amanda, Christina, Brenda, Stacy, Jennifer, and Valerie; twelve great-grandchildren and sister, Suzanne Somes Ryerson of Broad Run, Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his daughter, Thelma Delaine "Dee" Swope.
Bob and Betty met during World War II at the main USO in downtown Little Rock, Ark., where she was a junior hostess and he was serving in the U S Army.
They were married later that year, on Dec. 25, by Reverend Travis A. White of the First Christian Church. Bob moved his family to New Mexico in 1957 to accept a job at White Sands Missile Range. Bob was an avid bridge player and opened Rocket City Bridge Studio in the late 1950's. He achieved Gold Life Master status in the American Contract Bridge League. Bob enjoyed gardening, especially tomatoes, playing games with family and friends, and being an all-around handyman.
Memorial services will be conducted at Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel at 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 16, with Pastor Gary Buckner officiating.
Should friends desire, contributions may be made in Bob's name to Animal Village located at 7246 Highway 54/70 in Alamogordo, or to the charity of your choice.
The Williams family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation has taken place at PCS.
