Abran S. "Abe" Piedra, 90, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, died Monday, March 17, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Piedra was born March 16, 1918, in Durango, Mexico, and came to Alamogordo as a child. He worked for Southwestern Lumber Company in Alamogordo as a lumberjack from 1936 to 1942. During World War II he served in the Army from 1942 to 1945. Upon returning from the War, he worked at Holloman Air Force Base as a mechanic, and retired from civil service in 1979. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include two daughters, Christina Misquez and her husband Edward of Alamogordo, and Louisa Covarrubia and her husband Richard of Los Lunas; three sons, Joseph "Carlos" Piedra, Andrew Piedra and his wife Lynda, and Abraham "Sonny" Piedra and his wife Pat, all of Alamogordo; 11 grandchildren, Yvette Misquez of Alamogordo, Naomi Ortega and her husband Charles of Albuquerque, Christopher Covarrubia and his companion Maria Magdaleno of Los Lunas, Samuel Piedra, Mariah Piedra, Matthew Beaver, Alexandra Beaver, Abraham Piedra and Alicia Piedra, all of Alamogordo, Raymond Piedra of California, and Sonya Piedra of Alamogordo; three great-grandchildren, Alex Christopher Covarrubia of Los Lunas, Fabian Piedra of Colorado, and Abraham Santiago Trancoco of Phoenix; a brother Raymundo Piedra of Alamogordo; a sister Socorro Janway of San Antonio, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymundo and Rosa (Sandoval) Piedra; his wife, Andrea, in 2001; two brothers, Augustine and Alberto Piedra; and two sisters, Frances Piedra, and Lupe Contreras.
A vigil service was conducted Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rosary recited by Josie Chavez.
Mass of the Resurrection followed at 10 a.m. at with Father Bryant Hausfeld, O.F.M. as celebrant.
Interment followed in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery with military honors provided by the Army.
Pallbearers were be Augie Piedra, Anthony Parra, Andrew Piedra, Christopher Covarrubia, Eddie Lee Gonzales and Joe Olivarez. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Brusuelas, Joe Baca, Manuel Montoya, Alfredo Morales, Charlie Gonzales, Ronnie Faile, Gregorio Telles, Jr., and Mr. Piedra's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services were under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
