Alfonso Baca Rey Obituary

Alfonso Baca Rey, 95, was called home by our Heavenly Father on June 3, 2016. He was born on April 5, 1921, in Alamogordo, N.M., to Abel and Juanita (Baca) Rey. He credits his long life to his deep faith in our Lord.

Alfonso (Poncho) was a Corporal during World War II having served in Rome Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley earning an EAME Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge and Victory Ribbon and he received a Presidential Commendation for having served in three major battles. Poncho retired from the U.S. Federal Government Civil Service as a painter.

As a young man, Poncho loved wearing three piece suits and dancing. His wife Ramona would float through the air as they twirled around the dance floor. During his life, he was an avid horse race fan and also enjoyed playing cards with his friends. One of his favorite past times was spending time in his yard planting trees and rose bushes and watering them. He loved old western movies ("Cowboys" as he called them) and western novels.
