Alma Sanchez Lewis, 61, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at Mountain View Medical Center. She was born Jan. 22, 1947, in Las Cruces to Jesus and Luz Sanchez. She was a 1965 graduate of Las Cruces High School and attended New Mexico State University. Alma was retired from White Sands Missile Range. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and the Belton Bridge Club, and was the treasurer for the Doña Ana Peppers (Good Sams RV Club), and the Bluebells and Crossfires square dancing groups.
In addition to playing bridge and square dancing, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, whether it be at the local movie theater or in the great outdoors camping.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Thurman Michael Lewis; one daughter, Laurie Anderson and husband, Sammy, of Alamogordo; her parents, Jesus and Luz Sanchez, of Las Cruces; and three brothers, Armando Sanchez and wife, Inez, of Las Cruces, Alfonso Sanchez, of Las Cruces, and Robert Ortega and wife, Alice, of Santa Fe. Also surviving are two sisters, Susie Saiz and Ruth Sanchez, of Las Cruces; two grandchildren, Samantha and Ilene Anderson; her mother-in-law, Mary K. Lewis, of Louisa, Va.; and three brothers-in-law, Larry Lewis, of Williamsburg, Va., Carl Lewis, of Orlando, Fla., and Tony Lewis of Louisa, Va.
At Alma's request, cremation has taken place and a memorial Mass will be held Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at 4 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Las Cruces, with a reception to celebrate her life to follow at The Belton Bridge Center of Las Cruces, 1214 E. Madrid. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Holy Cross Church in her name.
