Former longtime resident
Anita L. "Mema" Sugamosto, 82, a former longtime resident of Alamogordo, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at her home in Las Cruces.
Anita was born Oct. 2, 1925, in Monroe, La., to Louis and Edna (Bennett) Powell. Her family moved to northern New Mexico, where she spent most of her childhood in Tucumcari. She met her future husband, Americo "Bob" Sugamosto, at a USO dance in Tucumcari, and they later married in Ft. Sumner in 1945.
They moved to Detroit, where they lived for 15 years before moving to Alamogordo in 1960. She worked for 20 years as a secretary for the city of Alamogordo, then for 20 years as a secretary for Base Auto Sales. She and Bob moved to Las Cruces in 2000 to be with their family.
She is survived by two sons, Ronald Sugamosto and his wife Mary, and Gary Sugamosto and his wife Keri, all of Las Cruces; six grandchildren, Keriana Sugamosto, of Phoenix, Crystal Sugamosto, of Las Cruces, Megan Sugamosto, of Alamogordo, Leah Freay, of Las Cruces, Gabriela Sugamosto, of Las Cruces, and Louis Sugamosto, of Las Cruces; five great-grandchildren, Silas, Sincere, Samya, Amelia and Innocence; and special friends, including Henry, Mary and Phil Cota, Mu, Matewai and Zumla Taiaroa; Nick, Donnie, Dennis, Scott and Ken Wallin; Daniel Selga; Bobby Sugamosto; Joe Durant; Joann Sugamosto; Rich Jones; Richard Webster and Carlos Colmenero.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, in 2006; and a granddaughter, Hermonie.
Anita was a wonderful woman and will be missed by all.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home and inurnment will be later at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery.
