1959 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Ann E. (Lester) Standefer Obituary

Ann E. Standefer, 56, passed away March 2, 2016, in her home after a three and a half year battle with ovarian cancer. She was born on Nov. 23, 1959, in Elk City, Oklahoma to James Murl Lester Jr. and Nellie (Sherwood) Lester.

Ann grew up in Roswell, N.M., graduating from Roswell High in 1977. She later attended Eastern New Mexico University where she met her husband of 33 years, Steve Standefer. Ann earned an MBA from ENMU in 1986. Ann had many jobs in her lifetime; she worked every year from age 15 until she retired in 2014. Ann worked as secretary for First Baptist Church in Portales while she and Steve attended college; she later worked training legal secretaries for the law firm Fulbright and Jaworski in Houston, Texas. Ann eventually became a computer teacher for Tularosa School District, where she taught until she retired.

She recently stated that teaching becomes much easier and more enjoyable when you love the students first, and then you teach them. Ann loved reading, walking, sewing, cooking and spending time studying the Bible. She enjoyed family vacations and had many fond memories of her trips to Vallecito Lake in Colorado. She loved her family dearly and cherished the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren. She was active at Bethel Baptist Church and she loved the Lord wholeheartedly. She remained strong in her faith to the very end.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Murl Lester of Cheyenne, Okla., and Nellie Lester of Roswell, N.M.

Ann is survived by her husband, Steve Standefer; her daughters Kristy Harris of Albuquerque, N.M., Lauren Mulkey and husband Clifton of Magnolia, Texas; her son, Trace Standefer and wife Breanna of Temple, Texas; three granddaughters, Bailey, Marily and Avery; three grandsons, Ethan, Lane and Everett; sister, Mary Valigura and husband Paul of Los Lunas, NM; brother, James Lester of Roswell, NM.

Ann would like to thank Dr. Gregory Seymour and Dr. Christine Lee of The Woodlands, Texas; Dr. Francisco Ampuero and Dr. Karen Finklestein of Albuquerque, N.M. She would also like to thank the nurses at the infusion center at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center and Alamogordo Home Care and Hospice. Ann was very grateful for their care over the last three and a half years.

The memorial service for Ann Standefer will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 12, 2016, at Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Howell Scott officiating.

The Standefer family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
