Anthony "Tony" Hunter Obituary
Anthony "Tony" Hunter, 57, of Alamogordo, passed away at home surrounded by friends and family on Monday, Jan. 25, 2010.
Tony was born Nov. 20, 1952, in Fort Worth, Texas. He graduated from I.M. Terrell High School in 1972, where he was one of the Firehouse Five, the best high school basketball team at the time. He joined the United States Air Force in July 1973, serving in the Philippines, South Korea, Okinawa, Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm and various bases throughout the U.S. Throughout his career, Tony was known as "The Surgeon of the Boneless Chicken Ranch" and "The Brown Hornet."
Tony met his future wife, Monica Timm, while they were stationed at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois. They married in Del Rio, Texas, in 1975 and had two children, a daughter, Dawn Marie, born in 1977, and a son, Anthony Jr., born in 1981. The family moved to Holloman Air Force Base in 1988, where Tony served in the 49th Maintenance Squadron Propulsion Flight until he retired in July 1993.
Tony loved fishing, horseshoes, camping and reading John Grisham novels. He was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. He was well known for Wednesday Barbecue Day at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center, where he served up the best ribs in town. Tony was a lifetime member of the VFW and veterans' rights were very important to him. He was a great poker and dominoes player. It could always be said of Tony that he never knew a stranger. Tony welcomed everyone, and loved to spend time with family and friends.
Tony is survived by his wife, Monica Timm Hunter, and his children Dawn Marie Hunter, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Anthony Hunter Jr., of Alamogordo. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Atalya Naarah Hunter, of Alamogordo. Tony was preceded in death by his father, Curtis Hunter, and three brothers, Lonnie, Donnie and Artie Hunter, all of Fort Worth.
