Former Tularosa village clerk
Antonio S. "Tony" Candelaria, 84, a lifelong resident of Tularosa, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at Casa Arena Blanca Nursing Center.
Mr. Candelaria was born Sept. 9, 1923, in Tularosa to Bernabel and Doña Simona (Serna) Candelaria. A veteran of the Marine Corps during World War II, he participated in the attack on Iwo Jima. He graduated from New Mexico State University with a degree in history, and was the former village clerk in Tularosa. He was a member of St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church, the 3rd Order of the Secular Franciscans, the Marine Corps League and the American Legion. He was well known for building crosses, particually the one at Round Mountain, one in Cloudcroft, two in Las Cruces and one at San Luis Rey Mission in Oceanside, Calif.
Survivors include two sons, Alex Candelaria and his wife Rocio, of Alamogordo, and John Candelaria, of Las Cruces; a daughter, Gloria Diaz and her husband Manny, of Tularosa; four grandchildren, Anthony Candelaria, of Riverside, Calif., Antoinette Diaz, of Tularosa, Terra Candelaria, of Las Cruces, and Michelle Perez, of Roswell; and 10 great-grandchildren, Daniell Aragon and Gabriel Walters, of Tularosa, Kevin Candelaria, of Denver, Daniel Candelaria and Christopher Candelaria, of Las Cruces, Aaron Tedder, of Riverside, Calif., and Jorge Avina, Abraham Avina, Martin Avina and Jasmine Avina, all of Alamogordo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Feliciana "Chana" Candelaria, in 1954; a son, Freddie Candelaria; a daughter, Marcela Candelaria; four brothers, Zeke, Pete, George and Rumaldo Candelaria; two sisters, Natalia Campos and Teresita Montoya; and two grandchildren, Eddie Candelaria and Danny Diaz.
A vigil service will be conducted Sunday at 7 p.m. at St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church with the Rosary to be recited by Josie and Matias Chavez.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated in the church on Monday at 10 a.m. with Father John Peterson, O.F.M., as celebrant.
Interment will follow in the Tularosa Cemetery with military honors by the Marine Corps.
Funeral escort will be provided by the Patriot Guard Riders of the American Legion.
Friends may call Sunday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
