Arnulfo Geronimo "Jerry" Armijo Obituary
Arnulfo "Jerry" Geronimo Armijo, 74, was taken into God's loving arms Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, after a short battle with leukemia. Jerry was born Nov. 5, 1937, in Alamogordo.
In his early years, Jerry helped run the family business, Armijo's Grocery. He graduated from Alamogordo High School in 1956. He attended New Mexico State University seeking his degree in engineering. He served in the National Guard as one of the top 10 in the nation as an expert marksman. After two years of college he volunteered to join the Army and was sent off to his first tour in Vietnam. Upon returning, Captain Armijo was offered a position in Germany, which he declined and requested that he be reassigned to the war. He returned to Vietnam, this time serving two tours. On his last tour he served in Vietnam at the American Embassy. He was awarded two Bronze Stars, the Expert Badge with Rifle Bar, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, five Overseas Bars, the National Defense Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal and a Purple Heart.
Upon returning from Vietnam a hero in 1972, he purchased a bar, renaming it Jerry's Lounge. Then in 1986 he opened the Kwik Stop convenience store. Later in 1994 he opened the first of two Kwik Lube oil change centers.
When he wasn't busy running his businesses or spending time with family, you'd find him flying his plane to San Pedro de la Cueva, Mexico, to go fishing on Novillo Lake, where he spent any free time he had. He also volunteered his time and resources to help participate in Rotary missions providing health and eye care to the less fortunate in Mexico along with fellow colleagues. For this he received the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award.
