Nov. 12, 1928 – Jan. 19, 2008
Atha Hill, longtime Alamogordo resident, passed from this earthy life Jan. 19, 2008. Atha was preceded in death by her husband, A.D. Hill, in 2001, and is survived by their three children; Larry Hill, of Albuquerque, Susan Hill and Gregory Hill, both of Alamogordo. Other surviving relatives are Larry's wife and son, Karen and Kevin; Gregory's wife, Lenora; Atha's brothers, Sam Lee and Tom Lee, of Arkansas; sisters-in-law Dorothy Lee, of Arkansas, and Martha Lee, of California; and 17 nieces and nephews.
Atha was born near Mena, Ark., where she grew up and married in 1947. The couple moved with their three children to Alamogordo in 1957, when A.D. went to work for the civil service at White Sands Missile Range.
Atha was active in local and state PTA in the 1960s, serving as a state officer. She also volunteered as a literacy advocacy tutor and traveled to the national convention in Florida.
A.D. and Atha were avid square dancers since 1972 with the Tulie Kickers, Shooting Stars, Basin Squares, Holloman Squares and the Space City Squares. Atha held several offices with the Shooting Stars. The couple made life-time friends as square dancers, and traveled to dances at district and national conventions.
Services will be held noon Monday, Jan. 28, at the First Assembly Church on Florida Avenue and Tenth Street. Services will be followed by a reception at the church. Flowers may be sent to the church on Monday morning. All are invited.
