Audrey E. Wallis Obituary

Audrey E. (Steele) Wallis, longtime resident of Alamogordo, beloved mother, cherished grandmother, teacher, and friend, went home with the Angels on Friday, Jan. 22, 2016.

Audrey was born Feb. 5, 1924, to Edna (McIntosh) Steele and Matthew Steele on the family farm in Gladstone, just north of Sandy Lake, Manitoba, Canada. Audrey was the only daughter of five children. As an adult, Audrey acquired U.S. Citizenship and attended college. After traveling to Truth or Consequences, N.M., she met and later married Russell Wallis. With her husband's support and encouragement, Audrey completed graduate school at Highlands in Las Vegas, N.M., and began a rewarding teaching career.

Audrey taught elementary grades and thousands of students over the course of her 30-plus years as a teacher, which took her across New Mexico to teach at Tse Bonito, Clapham, Amistad, Mosquero, Nara Visa, and Alamogordo. She taught first grade for nearly two decades at Father James B. Hay School in Alamogordo, retiring in 1990. Audrey remained active in her educational sorority group long after she retired.

Audrey raised two sons; Johnny Wallis and Kelly Wallis. After her retirement, Audrey enjoyed her family, friends, travel, and was active in her church. She cherished her two grandchildren, Brian Wallis of Alamogordo and Isabel Wallis of Carrolton, Texas, and later welcomed two great granddaughters, Andrea Howard of Carrolton, Texas, and Wynter Jayne Wallis of Las Cruces, N.M.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edna and Matthew Steele; twin brother, Allan, and brothers, Stewart, Ken, and Don Steele.

Survivors include her two sons, Johnny Wallis and wife Rachel of Carrolton, Texas; Kelly Wallis of Alamogordo; grandchildren, Brian Wallis and wife Cyndee of Las Cruces, N.M., and Isabel Wallis of Carrolton, Texas; beloved sister-in-law, Shirley Steele of Erickson, Manitoba, Canada; daughter-in-law Kathy Wallis of Alamogordo; two great granddaughters, several nieces and nephews, many good friends, and her beloved "City Kitty" (from Kitty City).

The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel.
Services for Audrey will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, at New Beginnings Church of the Nazarene, 817 N. Scenic Drive, with Pastor Ken Yocom officiating.

The Wallis family would love to welcome everyone who desires, to join them for a reception following the service at the New Beginnings Church of the Nazarene.

Following the services, Audrey will be laid to rest beside her husband, Russell, in the Amistad Cemetery in Amistad, N.M.

In lieu of flowers, the Wallis family asks that donations be made in Audrey's name to Kitty City, no-kill cat shelter, 56 Danley Ranch Road, Alamogordo, NM, 88310.

The Wallis family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the services.
