Loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother
Barbara A. Birdwell, 88, of Alamogordo, passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, in Alamogordo. Barbara was born Dec. 28, 1919, in Carlsbad to Arthur and Lesbia Hoose. One of five wonderful Hoose sisters, Barbara graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1938. She attended New Mexico State University, where she met her husband, the late Dr. John (Jerry) Birdwell, of Las Cruces. They were married in 1940 in Carlsbad. After their marriage, they lived in Carlsbad, Omaha, Neb., Las Cruces and finally Alamogordo.
Barbara was an avid sports fan, an accomplished pianist, loved playing bridge and loved reading both fiction and nonfiction books. She was a dedicated homemaker, mother and grandmother, attending countless Aggie and Tiger football games, band concerts, soccer matches and graduations. Her keen sense of humor and the twinkle in her eye never faded.
Survivors include her daughters Catherine (Kitty) White and her husband, Dr. Robert White, of Alamogordo, and Mary Helen Jordan and her husband, Keith, of Albuquerque; sons Dr. Robert Birdwell and his wife, Vinnie, of Phoenix, and Dr. John Cody Birdwell and his wife, Cindy, of Lexington, Ky.; grandchildren Todd White, Michelle Smith, Gary White, Mariah Littauer, Ashley Bird, Jerry Birdwell, Sandy Stoltzfus, Maire Birdwell and India Stewart; great-grandchildren Preston and Nathan White, Quinn and Catherine Smith, Catherine and John Michael Birdwell and Avery Stoltzfus; and sister Geraldine Stevens, of Crawfordsville, Ind.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Phyllis Battiste, Janet Miles and Patricia Hoose.
Services will be held Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, at 10 a.m. at St. Jude Mission Catholic Church with Father Tom Hoffman, S.J., officiating. The rosary will be recited Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at 7 p.m. at the Hamilton-O'Dell Chapel. Burial will follow at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Jerry Birdwell, Todd White, Gary White, Keith Jordan, Dr. Bob White and Raymond Compary.
Memorials contributions can be made to the St. Jude Mission in memory of Barbara Birdwell.
Services are under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
