1929 - 2011 Obituary Condolences
Bernard "Bernie" Stevens, a resident of High Rolls, passed away Monday, Dec. 12, 2011.
Bernie was born near London, England on Feb. 9, 1929. He was part of the evacuation of children to save a generation during the World War II bombing of London. He was placed on a farm in Wales.
After the war, he joined a British tank brigade and served in Egypt. While in the service, he became a boxer and won the welterweight championship of his regiment.
In the early sixties Bernie moved, with his wife and two children, to California where he owned an HVAC contracting business. In 2000, he married Sharon Gill and they moved to High Rolls.
Bernie was a volunteer fireman for High Rolls. He also coached soccer, and broke the New Mexico 100- and 400-meter sprint records while participating in the Senior Olympics.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his children Mark and Diane; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Cottonwood Christian Fellowship Church on U.S. Highway 54 on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at 4 p.m.
