Betty June Matthews Brockett Obituary
Betty June Matthews Brockett began her journey to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 11, 2009.
An Alamogordo resident since 1969, Betty is survived by her husband of 57 years, George C. Brockett Jr. The Brocketts owned and operated several businesses in the Alamogordo area and southern New Mexico, including George's Restaurant and Rib Room, It's Burger Time and the Waffle and Pancake Shoppe. Betty and George encouraged and assisted many of their employees to earn a college education and pursue the American dream of owning and operating their own businesses.
She will be remembered as a loving, kind, compassionate and gentle woman who touched the lives of many.
She is also survived by her four children, Steve Brockett and his wife, Sueko, David Brockett, Kelly Whitehead and her husband, Parks, all of Alamogordo, and Karen Gartner and her husband, Monte, of Owasso, Okla. She had 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Annie Matthews, two brothers and one sister.
One of 11 children, Betty was born in Plainview, Texas, on Feb. 22, 1933, which also happened to be the birth date of George Washington. Following graduation from Sunset High School, near Munday, Texas, Betty moved to Austin, Texas, where she was employed by the Texas Department of Public Safety, then still known as the Texas Rangers. She met her future husband during high school. They were wed on July 12, 1952, in Munday. As it turned out, George shares the same birth date as Thomas Jefferson.
A viewing will be held at the Alamogordo Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Her funeral will be on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Christ Community Church Chapel in the Desert, where Pastor Jack Brock will preside during the services.
Pallbearers will be her six oldest grandsons, Brandon and Jason Brockett, Ryan and Sean Gartner and Parks and Allan Whitehead.
The Brockett family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
